PADI Self-Reliant Diver Instructor

The PADI Self-Reliant Diver course is a new PADI distinctive specialty that aims to recognise and accept the role of the buddy system and its contributions to diver safety while identifying and developing self-reliance and independence while diving. There are two reasons for an experienced diver to take the Self-Reliant diver course:

  • To develop the skills of planning and carrying out dives without a partner when preferred or necessary.
  • To sharpen skills of diving self-reliance, making the diver a stronger partner in a dive pair or team.

This course covers when diving alone may be applicable, and the need to compensate for those situations, including dive planning, life support system readiness, adaptive training, equipment and responsibility.

Equipment for Self-Reliant diving requires some extra thought. Some use a simple modification of recreational diving equipment, such as the use of a pony bottle or a H or Y valve on a large capacity single tank to provide regulator redundancy at the first stage. Others prefer to use double tanks based on a technical configuration of either sidemount or backmount.

Other necessary equipment includes an SMB so that a diver can mark their position in the water.

Prerequisites

To enrol in the PADI Self-Reliant Diver Specialty Instructor course, the candidate must:

  1. Be a renewed PADI Instructor (or have completed an IDC/OWSI Program within the past 12 months);
  2. Be certified as a PADI Self-Reliant Diver, PADI TecRec Diver or hold another qualifying certification, or complete the PADI Self-Reliant Diver course in conjunction with the PADI Self-Reliant Diver Specialty Instructor course
